BJD son las iniciales de Ball Jointed Doll (muñecas articuladas con bolas). Estas muñecas articuladas modernas se crearon en Asia y por eso también se las conoce por ABJD (Asian Ball Jointed Dolls), aunque hay gente que las llama, equivocadamente, Dollfie o Super Dollfie que son el nombre de las primeras muñecas que salieron a la venta y que fueron creadas por Volks (Japón). Aunque nacen en Japón, rápidamente crean casas también en Corea y China. Sus clientes son sobre todo de EE.UU y Europa. En España hay más de 3000 aficionados a ellas.

Lo primero que llama la atención de estas muñecas son sus articulaciones y el material con el que están hechas: la resina. Además que son totalmente customizables. Cada persona puede personalizar su muñeca a su gusto, ya que se les puede cambiar fácilmente la peluca, ojos, maquillaje y por supuesto la ropa y los zapatos. De esta forma una misma muñeca puede ser totalmente diferente de otra del mismo modelo. A parte de que también hay gente que hace modificaciones en sus caras, cuerpos y demás con lijas.

También hay costureras que cosen autenticas maravillas para ellas. Aunque eso si, todo lo referente a estas muñecas es bastante caro. Así que si no sabes hacer alguna de estas cosas, mejor que vayas practicando y así te ahorrarás mucho dinero.

El inventor de estas muñecas fue el escultor Akihiro Enku (jefe de la empresa Japonesa Volks). Su idea era crear una muñeca con articulaciones con bolas unidas por cuerdas, como las del SigloXIX. Aunque en vez de utilizar porcelana como en la antigüedad, él utilizó resina, así seria mucho más resistente, personal y moderno. La muñeca era un regalo que le hizo Enku a su esposa, pero a Volks le gustó tanto que hicieron una producción comercial y así crearon la linea de nuevas muñecas de resina de 60cm y las llamaron Super Dollfie (SD). Las primeras que crearon fuero cuatro hermana en 1999. Después de Volks, aparecieron nuevas marcas de muñecas fuera de Japón. Corea fué el primero en comercializar sus propias muñecas, con marcas como LUTS o Custom House. En 2003 las casas coreanas empezaron a comercializar por todo el mundo siendo el país en el primer creador y exportador de BJD. China, a dia de hoy también tiene una importante producción de muñecas, la marca más representativa de este país es Dollzone. Además hay también marcas fuera de Asia, como en EE.UU.

Las BJD son principalmente para un público coleccionista adulto, muchas veces por lo artístico y personalizable de estas muñecas. El precio varia mucho dependiendo de la marca, el tamaño y si son limitadas o no, pero van desde los 100€ hasta más de 1000€. Son muy realistas ya que imitan al ser humano, aunque no siempre es así, ya que también hay modelos de animales (mascotas de cuatro patas y muñecas con cabeza de animal) o las que son muñecas con patas de animal, cola, cuernos...

Las BJD´s están hechas de resina, aunque no es resina natural sino una derivación especial del plástico. La mayoría de marcas utilizan la resina de poliuretano, aunque otras casas usan resina francesa o una mezcla especial propia entre estos dos tipos. La resina es un material duro y de fácil tratado que puede modificarse fácilmente, por eso es un material imprescindible para las BJD ya que se puede modificar con lijas según los gustos de cada uno.

Most brands use the polyurethane resin, though other homes use French resin or a own special blend beetwen these two types. The resin is a hard material with easily treated that can be easily modified, so it is an essential material for BJD because can be modified with sandpaper according the preferences of every one.

El color de la resina es el color de la "piel" de nuestra muñeca que en las tiendas se denomina "skin" (piel). Los más populares son "Normal skin/Real skin" (parecido a la piel humana), "White skin" (blanco, pálido) y "Yellow skin" (tono amarillo). Aunque cada marca los llama diferente, aunque sean el mismo tono o parecido. También hay otro tipo de tonos menos comunes como el "Tan skin" (morenito) o colores de fantasia como el "Green skin", "Red skin", "Blue skin", "Grey skin", "Black skin"... Incluso algunos modelos incluyen piezas de resina transparentes como alas, cuernos, colas... Siendo la resina un material resistente también necesita sus cuidados como por ejemplo: no tiene que darles la luz del sol, no utilizar materiales abrasivos o grasos en ellas ni fumar en la misma habitación donde las tengas.

Los cuerpos de las BJD están hechos de piezas con articulaciones que se unen con gomas. Pueden unirse las articulaciones con dos o tres gomas. La más conocida es con dos gomas: una desde la cabeza, pasando por el torso hasta los tobillos (enganchadas con ganchos a los pies y a la cabeza). Y la otra goma va a lo largo de los brazos, pasando por el torso y enganchándose con ganchos en las manos. En total se necesitan 5 ganchos. Hay cuerpos de articulación simple y de articulación doble articulada, esta última con mayor posabilidad. Incluso las hay con el torso dividido en dos y en tres partes. -1/4 MSD: Tamaño que va desde los 40cm a los 47cm. Representan a los adolescentes.
